Herbert Dawson, born 1918 - died 1972.

Cricket career 1932 - 1964. Right hand bat, right medium fast bowler with slow leg break delivery.

Bert lived all his life in New Road and was one of Tintwistle's greatest characters. A superb footballer, who played at the centre of Tintwistle Villas defence before and after the Second World War. He captained the team in many of their successful years. During the Second World War, Bert served with the Airbourne Division and was captured at Arnhem by the Germans, a fate which also befell his brother Joseph. They both remained prisoners of war until the end of the War. Berts father Joe, was also a prisoner during the First World War. Berts cricket career with Tintwistle CC was colourful. A genuine all-rounder, bowling right arm fast medium, with a deadly slower ball delivered as a leg break. One of the best slip fielders the club has seen. When Bert was batting, everyone watched. His powerful hitting brought run scoring to a feverish pitch. Those who knew him well can still picture him walking to the crease, eager to take up the attack. The Cup is awarded to the player who scores most points (scored via Runs, Wickets & Catches) in the 1st XI in a single season.
