Tintwistle Cricket Club - The Jack Thorpe Cup
Jack Thorpe - born 1915 - died 1975.
Jack was a keen supporter of the Cricket Club for many
years. Although he never played cricket, he certainly knew all the rules and tactics. Jacks working life was spent at the offices at Waterside Mill up to the time it
closed down. He was best appreciated for his fund-raising, aiding the Clubs
then
Secretary, Tom Garlick. The pair could be found on many a wintry night knocking
on doors throughout Tintwistle selling football cards and collecting money. He was
Assistant Secretary to Tom and also to Billy Cropper when he was Secretary. Jack
was also League Delegate with Tom when the Club was a member of the Glossop & District League. It was my pleasure to act with Jack as Club Auditor for the few
years
before his death in 1975. The Jack Thorpe
Cup was presented to the Club by
Jacks family. It is awarded to the player, including wicket keepers, who take the
most catches in either the 1st X1
or 2nd X1 in a season.
